| How
have things been since the last time we talked? Things have been great. Iīve been in Mexico for most of that time except for a short visit home to Winnipeg for Christmas. You went to Mexico in October 2003 in hopes of getting a shot at working for a promotion. Less than a year later you have taken the whole country by storm. How did things start out when you first got to Mexico? When I first got here, I was lucky enough to have Eddie Watts take me under his wing and introduce me to a lot of promoters in Northern Mexico. He helped me with every aspect of Mexican wrestling, including speaking Spanish! When I met up with him in Nuevo Laredo after 52 hours on a bus, he took me to a show that very night that I had the opportunity to be involved in. The next day we went to Monterrey where he showed me a cheap place to live. He took me to the Arena Solidaridad to train and talk with the promoters, whom I had met on my previous visit with Mike Lozanski. I also met Prinesa Sugey at the Arena and she told me about Lucha Libre Feminil and suggested I come to see LLFīs next show. I showed up with Eddie as a translator and worked that night. Since then I have developed a great relationship with LLF and several other promoters in the area. You were recently planning to move to Mexico City. Have you done so already ? If yes, how are things going? Yes, Iīve moved out of Monterrey to Mexico City. Itīs going well; Iīm still trying to figure the city out. Itīs enormous. The main reason for the move was to be closer to the Triple A offices and the opportunities that would bring. They have put me on T.V. and are helping me to get bookings in other areas of Mexico. Iīve only been there for a couple of weeks and still figuring lots of stuff out. But I have a roof over my head and tacos on my plate, so I guess Iīm still in the game. There is actually lots of work in Monterrey right now for the women and many people questioned my reasons for leaving Monterrey at such a busy time. Iīd been in Monterrey for nearly 8 months and I just knew that it was the right time for me to try something new. I traded lots of work for the opportunity to try something new, more publicity, and the chance to learn in a bigger company. Have you had any contact with the WWE since your try out in 2003? Yes, Iīve had plenty of contact. That doesnīt mean too much though! Only that Iīm stayng in touch so that theyīre aware of what Iīm doing. My main priorities right now are training and focusing on staying in Mexico. I love this country and all that itīs given to me. What are your thoughts on NWA - TNA using a 6-sided ring? Makes no difference to me. AAA uses the same type of ring for T.V. Speaking of TNA have you had any contact with them since the last time we talked? No. We know how Lincoln Steen feels about guys working free, I am sure everyone had read that commentary by now, but how do you feel about it? People who constantly work for free just donīt know any better. Sometimes Iīve taken only experience as my paycheck and it was worth way more to me than any monetary value. Your feelings on Lincoln Steen, Tony Armstrong & Vinny Glyde all deciding to leave MSW? Itīs obviously a blow to the MSW roster, MSW wonīt be the same without them. Those three were the top talent MSW had to offer, with them being gone do you think MSW will be around much longer? I canīt say. I know Devin is an extremely hard worker who wants to see his dream realized. He has already accomplished so much with the company and should be proud. I donīt know why these guys left MSW, but hopefully there is something to be learned by the company. If MSW can learn something positive from the talent leaving, maybe MSW can take some time to regroup and come back stronger. Will we see Sweet Sarah return to MSW with out those three being there? I canīt say when, but it would certainly be a pleasure to come back to work for MSW. I miss those days at Doolittleīs, especially fans like Chris and Sarah, the cheap wings, and Pistol Peteīs promos! You are known as the Dark Angel in Mexico, where did that name come from? When I wrestled in Edmonton and BC I came out to the ring wearing wings and a mask similar to the one I wore in Mexico. When I first got to Mexico I showed the Nuevo Laredo promoter some pictures and he really liked that image. Eddie Suggested the name and there you have it. Iīve since dropped the wings and lost the mask, but the name stuck. You were also wearing a mask for most of your time in Mexico which you most recently lost in a Mask vs Mask match, which saw you get busted open for the first time in your career. Can you tell us a little about what that mask meant to you and how the match went ? It was a very emotional match; 45 minutes of violent exchange between myself and Princesa Sugey (coming soon to www.newscott.com). I was surprised at the publicity this match got. The mask was an important part of my identity in Mexico and I was sad to take it off. At the same time, it was a positive time for me because I had the chance to reinvent myself and show the people a different and more personal side of me. How did it feel when you finally had to take the mask off? How did the crowd react? I was really emotional; more than I thought I would be. I had just fought the hardest battle of my career against the toughest woman Iīd ever wrestled and I think I was saddened that our brutal feud had finally peaked. Immediately after losing the match there were reporters asking me to reveal my true identity. It was strange to have everyone calling out to me by my real name. The crowd was on their feet for most of the match and went wild when I took the mask off. I think they really appreciated the fight and the intensity that Sugey and I displayed to defend our identities. You have made it known that one other place that you want to wrestle is in Japan. Have you had any contact with any promoters over there? Yes, Iīve had contact, though nothing has come to fruition yet. Youīll be the first to know if anything comes through. I would leap at the opportunity to work in Japan, but as Iīve said, my main priority is to keep having successes in Mexico. Do you think you would ever just go to Japan the way you went to Mexico and the way you walked into OVW, in hopes of getting booked? I doubt it....you never know. I donīt speak a lick of Japanese. You also recently had an interview in Total Wrestling magazine, with a few very nice pictures. How did you come about being in that magazine? I still havenīt seen that magazine. I met the editor, Bill Apter, when I was in Pennsylvania doing some shows for WXW. We hit it off right away and he suggested that if I could get some pictures to him right away, heīd put me in the magazine. The very talented Eric Schaffer took some pictures that day and did an interview. Did the New Scott T-Shirt make the trip to Mexico with you? Nah, I framed it and nailed it to the wall above my bed with a picture of The Man himself. In your last interview with me you said "In Mexico, it would be nice to see the women getting paid as much as the men." Has that happened yet? Nope. Who has been your favourite opponent so far in Mexico? Princesa Sugey. Any thing else you would like to say ? Thank you for the interview and your continued support. Any female wresters reading this would be well-advised to look into LLF. Other Canadians such as Madison and Lufisto (formerly Precious Lucy) have also worked for LLF and the girls are well looked-after and treated like gold. With LLFīs new alliance with AAA, this promotion is a great way to meet other contacts in Mexico and throughout the States. Name Association CM Punk- very cool person; helped me out a lot with ROH Princesa Sugey- courageous, determined, dedicated, athletic, talented...she loves a good fight and respects herself Adam Knight- very sweet and cool; had great matches with him Scott Savage- a.k.a. the nightcrawler, Xmas tree killer, and former basement-dweller...the wrestling world is suffering without his dedication and humility. Christopher Daniels- only met him once, seemed really nice Bobby Rude- doing what we all want to be doing; makes me proud to be a Canadian Eddie Watts- I donīt know where Iīd be without his advice and help Phil Lafon- made me hungry for knowledge, has really inspired me and brings out my best Steve Rivers- Patient and hilarious and knowledgable; a good friend |
