Who trained you?
See above but I also credit Bad News Allen with teaching me alot of the little
things that make a good wrestler and most recently Scott D'Amore.
What was the hardest part of your training?
The initial physicality was hard but it was the intensity with which we trained
in the days i began in the dungeon. and getting stretched by the national champion
amature wrestlers in the dungeon at the time Jordan Clarke and Greag Pawluk
and Dean Clarke. As well as getting stretched by Stu, but that I consider an
honor. (4 times fyi)
Who do you go to the most for advice?
Now I go to Scott, but it used to be Bad News.
Joe E. Legened did an interview with me back
in October 2004, he spoke out in great detail about TNA. What are your feelings
on what he said (http://www.newscott.com/joeelegendoct42004.html)
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone takes dofferent things from
the same situations. Do I feel the same as Joe? No, but then we have very different
situations.
What do you consider your greatest match so far?
So far it would have to be the Last Man Standing match I had with Highlander
Rob McManus in Thunder Bay for Don Callis's NHB to finish our years long feud.
I was excellent and I am still waiting for a tape of it from Steven in TBay.
So
Steven if you read this I WANT THAT TAPE!!!!!!!
As of August 19 2005 how many matches do you have?
Over 900-1000 somewhere around there.
Do you have a favourite road trip story you can share?
Yes but it's not for public consumption yet. Maybe in a book one day. But there's
a good one on Cheech's journal that cracks me up everytime where he chops a
stripper harder than I think I've ever seen anyone chopped before.
What is your favourite town, city or country to
wrestle in?
Ohhh, tough question. I've wrestled in some pretty cool places and towns. I
think I will have to give Thunder Bay the edge only cause the crowd REALLY gets
behind me there. But Edmonton and Nashville are close seconds.
If you could wrestle one person everyday who would
it be?
At this point I think Alex Shelly. Wed could have some real classics as our
styles and demeanors mesh excetionally well and we could do very different things
every time. For a funness factor I think Showtime Eric Young. He's great. And
can work his ass off to carry me. heh
Do you think you will recieve your shot at the
NWA heavyweight title?
No. I don't think I am Heavyweight title material. I am too short and probably
won't get the chance to work the "big" boys. No biggie to me though.
I am happy just working. And don't need titles to get over.
Do you ever see your self going to WWE?
Probably not. My style and attitude are not WWE material as well as being near
midget status there.
What are your thoughts on the whole Ring Of Honor concept, the field of honor,
the code of honor, pretty much promoting it's product as more of a sport, then
sports entertainment?
I love it and have been trying to get Gabe to book me for 3 years. I would fit
perfectly there but there seems to be some force blocking me from working there.
The whole code of honor is a fantastic concept and one I look forward to one
day
experiencing. I really like a lot of the workers they have there too.
What exactly did you do during your time in the
Canadian Army and why did you leave?
I was in the infantry as a C9 machine gunner. I took alot of courses including
Survival, my "jump" or paratrooper course. I was a chaufeur, oops,
I mean driver for the officer in charge of Administration company which was
the best job ever.
Alot of time at the gym and get to know everything going on. I left because
my 3 year contract was up and I didn't want to move to Edmonton with the rest
of the calgary base.
Your thoughs on being part of TNA's Team Canada?
It really is an Honor and privelidge. I am rediculously patriotic and love to
wear the maple leaf where ever I go. As some know. As well the guys in Team
Canada are some of the best workers I've ever known. I am looking forward to
returning to the fold as soon as possible.
Would you like to compete in the Maritimes ?
I was supposed to come through the Maritimes a few years back with the Wildman
but can't remember what happend. I would love to though as there are alot of
guys O love out there and there is a rich history there that I would like to
some day be a part of.
Has TNA changed much since Dusty Rhodes left?
Absolutely. Morale is sooooo much higher now that the bookers know the names
of the talent. Just to give you an idea there was a time when Dusty took over
and promised to "push" the X division that he called the members of
Team Canada: Big
Canada(Bobby) Little Canada(Petey) Team Canada Ankle(Showtime) and Blond Canada(me).
How the hell do you book a company and not know the names of your talent?!?
How will TNA change when they start to air on
Spike TV?
There will be a huge jump in exposure so PPV buys will go up. The workrate will
remain the same as it has always been high there but guys will start to step
up their promos and ring presence as well. Other than that only the backstage
politics will change with everyone trying to find space on a 1 hour tv show.
Do you think TNA will ever air on Monday nights
and go head to head with RAW?
Not in the near future but never say never.
If you were to start your own promotion today
who would be the first 5 people on your roster?
hmmmm Roster only?
1:Bobby Roode
2:Chris Harris
3:Abyss
4:Alex Shelly
5:Frankie Kazarian
Who is your favourite person to watch wrestle?
Right now its AJ or Alex Shelly, it used to be Dynamite, HBK and Flair.
What is the first wrestling match you ever remember
watching?
Live? Owen and Dynamite in Calgary at the pavillion. On tv Road Warriors vs
Free Birds on tape on like 83 or 84 maybe. My timeline may be off. Memory's
not what it once was.
What does the future hold for Johnny Devine?
Keep at it till my body shuts down, continue to entertain the masses as best
I can. Try to branch out into announcing eventually. I want Don West's job so
lookout Don! heh
Any closing comments?
I hope that anytime people see Johnny Devine's name on a poster or card they
know that they will get their money's worth and go home talking about "that
blond guy that looked like Jericho/Christian/Edge/and so on" and how good
he
was.
